18 December 2005 was a sad day as it was the day that someone dear left us.
Che Dah, my FIL’s youngest sister died in the early morning of 18 December after fighting colon cancer for about a year. She discovered the cancer during the month of Ramadhan 2004 and barely a year later, she lost her fight. Her physical transformation during the one year period was almost unbelievable. She lost more than 40kg that by the time of her death, her weight was barely 20kg. Unfortunately, a surgery and 12 sessions of chemotherapy did not work for her, despite her strong spirit and support from her family.
Her death was a great loss to me. Though DH and I visited her only a few times a year whenever we were back in Kelantan, I felt particularly close to Che Dah. She always made us feel welcome with her warmth, generosity and kindness. One thing nobody would dispute is the extent of Che Dah’s generosity. She always extended her helping hands, be it to family, friends or neighbours. Her home was always frequented by her guests, a proof of her friendliness.
Seeing her during her last few days was hard. It was difficult to reconcile the frail figure, fighting for her final breaths, to the plump and lively Che Dah that I used to know. Initially none of us thought she would lose the fight, perhaps because the cancer was discovered early, or because she was strong and young, or because it was simply unthinkable to lose her. In the end we had to accept her fate, that she wasn’t going to be around much longer.
And so it was, in the early morning of 18 September 2005, Che breathed her last at the age of 48, surrounded by her doting husband and children. Al-fatihah.
